I blogged about this since it's a nice win for the Japanese team here.
Getting Japan's Information-Technology Promotion Agency (part of METI --
the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry) to recognize OpenSolaris
is excellent. Perhaps this will help us when starting conversations with
universities here since the government is involved to certain degree
with open source in this market (though I'm still coming up to speed on
this so forgive my ignorance).
I find it also encouraging that the Sun team here lead with OpenSolaris
when talking about a Solaris & Sun Ray deployment. This is an example of
how open source can help sell products and how a company's support of a
product can help grow the developer community working on the source.
I'll follow this, of course, and report back. If there is anyone who has
more info, please let me know. :)
Again, you can put the Japanese links through Google's translator
http://translate.google.com/translate_t but the English is rough.
