Curious, what problems other than $PATH would those be?

The shell PATH issues at least can easily be dealt with with some 
intelligent system profiles (e.g. see /etc/profile.d/ on some linux 
systems).

It's not too difficult to splice an appropriate PATH together based on 
what is installed to make things easy for users, it's impossible to 
split super-directories though.

So there must be more to it than just $PATH?
