Are you building a package for Solaris or GNU/OpenSolaris (Nexenta)?
If it's the latter, the convention we currently use is to give GNU
file system layout a priority over Sun's, and if there is a conflicting
namespace, we place Sun's version under /usr/sun, etc.  This is not
set in stone, and might evolve as time progresses.

If you're building for the former, then obviously Sun file system
layout takes precedence, and you'd need to place your binary in
places under /opt.
