Intercepting top just won't work. You are correct that this is an approachability
problem in that it should be in the default PATH, even if it is not in /usr/bin.
I've not kept up with the SFW or related discussions, which is where this will
most likely take place.

Launch -> All Applications -> System Tools -> Performance Monitor
What I like about it is that you can quickly resort. I must be getting lazy... :-)
