There will definitely be a need for something along these lines,
though I suspect ON will not be the first place to adopt it. In SFW
this is going to become critical sooner as more and more components
become available. The monolithic build/source tree will collapse under
its own size so there will need to be ways to build the components
individually.

I started writing a bit about this
(http://blogs.sun.com/jyrivirkki/entry/unconsolidating) a few weeks
ago and meant to follow up with alternative and some experimentation
before the holidays but the day job intervened. Hopefully I'll get to
it early next year.

Anyway, if it's something you're interested in it'll probably make
sense to follow sfw (sfw-discuss).
