There should be a way to detect and/or enable it during install. I
think you'll find many people that do use this within a corporate
environment for workstations, etc. I have personally never used it,
but I have never worked at a place that used NIS.

You do realise what that is for don't you? I assume you want to be
able to run a graphical environment, etc. right? You probably want to
keep this one :)
