Why does perl and python make so much sense. They are not so important 
that they could not be replaced by 'C' code or shell scripts. How many 
scripting languages do we really need?

Perl is used in a couple of areas during boot up. Python is used by 
Gnome. Java is used as a plugin for the browser, Java Webstart and some 
applications. In there current state, they all need to be in the core OS.
