For the part about user choosing the softwares, I believe SXCE
(Solaris Express Community Edition) does just that.
The Developer Edition does not provide any option (this was supposed
done intentionally for SXDE).

It is probably a matter of communicating this clearly to the people
attempting to install SXDE. Having always used SXCE + SunStudio, I was
also surprised the first time I installed SXDE recently.
