Actually these are not mine but Brian Guptas:

I would take this a step further, claiming that we need a OS core that
would be the core of
Solaris, Nexenta, Belenix, yet to come shmolarix, shmelenix and however
you want to call your future distro.
I disagree with the notion for a "Opensolaris" packaging system. Let
every derived distro do its own packaging. We are the core, we are
neutral, we don't tell you what GUI to use, if you wan't WIN32 on top of
the core, go ahead and do it.
This would be what I would call a core reference, which would also make
the binaries between real distros or however you want to call them
compatble, without the need of them being pure wishi washy if they want
to contain compatibility.
So getting back to the point, the q. for me is not which GUI, which
packaging, which bla bla app to add but rahter, what all can we get rid
of ? What is the smallest common denominator ? How to make this smallest
common denominator usefull as a demo ? How to make it so that it is easy
to roll your own ? Lets say Freelaris, the distro that includes
freeswitch or siparis, the distro around the sipx server.
Anyway thats just MHO
cheers
