I agree with Michal ideas. Something like that would *help* all existing
distros, not *compete* with them.

As for packaging, I'll add my 0,015 €:
yes, Solaris packaging is old, rusty, creaking at the joints. I've had
many issues with it. It can, and does, break in nasty ways.
However, I would not like that a distro calling itself WhateverSolaris
would not use something compatible with Solaris, at the minimum, with
the CLI commands. Ian himself rehashed how important compatibility is in
the Solaris name.

What I mean is not that this SysV packaging is sufficient, but that it
needs improvement, and that a project Indiana should help improving it,
and putting it up to par with current systems. I know there's some work
being done on that already. It shouldn't just barge ahead and abandon it
altogether. If Solaris packaging system is to be replaced (and that
might be a good solution), it should be pushed forward at the same time.

Laurent

PS:
I've also had packaging issues with Debian. Oh, and RedHat, too. They're
not perfect, either. And they lack the concept of patches, which is
something that, for all its flaws, I like a lot in the Solaris packaging
system.
