So obviously we should make the same editor GUI reachable during the 
initial install.

But in any event, the user properties that are most annoying to change
later -- and uid tops that list -- should be settable in the initial
install.  Pick one by default, hide it behind an "expert" tab if
necessary, but let the expert pick it since it may need to match the
rest of the expert's network.
