uhhhh... .What's a shell ;)
As a die-hard Linux user (patiently waiting for a Solaris for mere
mortals) I try to do most things via a windowing system, reserving the
shell for "power user" operations as I learn them.
One of the first power user operations I learned is b-a-s-h. ;)
I think that getting a usable desktop in the hands (or desktop) of the
masses is the big win. Look at what KDE has done for Linux. Yes I know
that Gnome is valuable, too, but it has a history of being for the
techno-geeks. KDE, IMHO, put it (Linux) in the hands of the masses.
As a Java developer, I found that Solaris x64 out performed most other
platforms for both development and deployment, but was almost like
speaking a foreign language when it came to admin.
That being said, when I can get a stable copy of Indiana and SMB support
in fstab, then I'm re-imaging my dual-dual core 64 bit cpus with
Indiana, bite the bullet and learn the admin.
