I don't agree with the implication there. Naming a distro "OpenSolaris" would mean a lot of things, but I don't immediately see how it would hurt other distributions.

That said, I think overloading the OpenSolaris term more than once is a bad idea. Explicit names to the effect of OpenSolaris Codebase and OpenSolaris Reference Distribution and "OpenSolaris Inside" I can deal with.

One thing that makes discussions like these difficult for me is the lack of clarity about the stakeholders involved. Sun Microsystems employees have done nearly all of the work ever done on OpenSolaris-related projects. The largest and only powerful group of contributers is employed by Sun Microsystems. The leaders controlling the work output of those contributers are Sun Microsystems employees and are also the leaders on nearly all OpenSolaris-related projects. As a civilian my first thought is not "what do I think?", it is "does what I think matter?"

And that's fine because like I said, because Sun Microsystems is the entity that is doing basically all the work. But I have to keep this in mind when I try to contribute some words. Because like it or not, as of today, the Sun Microsystems entity has the final say in almost anything OpenSolaris related.

So on the name branding topic, since Sun Microsystems is the entity doing all the work, I want to know what Sun Microsystems wants to do, and then I want to comment on that. I don't want to waste my time talking about domains that aren't even on the plate.

As such I'd like to see the Sun Microsystems branding proposal for Indiana and OpenSolaris put up on the appropriate project page ( http://www.opensolaris.org/os/project/indiana/ ? ) so that all the civilians know what the people behind Indiana want to do. Then we can all be "on the same page", as they say.
