FWIW, The boot splash implementation used by Linux XP is called
bootsplash.  The last time I evaluated bootsplash, it required a
patched Linux kernel.

A newer project called Splashy uses directfb.  I don't recall if
directfb is working with the Solaris framebuffer or not...
