Excellent advice, though I would strive to get rid of /opt altogether (use
/usr/local).

Unnecessary partitioning used to be our number one source of tech support
calls. Now they're almost unheard of. Partitions are an historical
artifact from the days when the entire OS wouldn't fit on a single disk.
They have not been necessary or advisable since 1.3G and larger drives
became available back around 1993. Even Sun, internally, gives their
employees and contractors single partition systems. Users with a specific
application that needs its own partition will know how to create them.

Even more problematic are root mountpoints, but that's another thread.
