It's this kind of thinking that is part of the reason why Solaris is
fat and slow. People like you insist on a 30 year old Bourne shell and
then require Perl at boot time to do things almost all newer shells
can do. IMO Solaris needs a more capable shell, and obviously ksh93 is
the best choice for it.

PS: I attached a ksh93 sample script from Solaris as an educational
example and encouragement to learn a bit before spreading more FUD
