It may or may not help, but it could be related to character set. I
just ran into a situation the other day where something else on Solaris
was slower than expected, and it was ultimately related to UTF-8 in GNU
grep. In your case, the last one is UTF-8, but the other two are
different character sets.
Some more experimentation with different character sets may be worth
looking into. It could also be related to the loading of libraries when
you hit pages with different character sets the first time. Does a
subsequent reload also "slow to a crawl"?
