Have you installed OpenSolaris or are you just running from the CD ? You will get much better performance once the system is installed on the hard drive, especially if you have a limited amount of RAM.

You don't mention the hardware you are using, its possible you are seeing the same problem I had with a Nvidia FX1100 graphics card, this is an older card and requires the legacy Nvidia derivers to get decient performance. The details are here:
