Could you please post the exact solution here, including what commands you ran?

I'm running Indiana within VMWare Fusion, and I'm getting the same problem.   If I don't install VMWare Tools, the networking won't function.

I get the same problem with X11 as you did.  Namely, I'd get a blank screen indefinitely when trying to run X11.
