Just FYI, I have figured out the cause of the problem and now have a fully-functional OpenSolaris VM.  Anyway, when VMware Tools are installed they install their own version of the X11 video and mouse drivers.  However, these versions don't work with the OpenSolaris DP2 preview.  Putting the original versions back in place of the VMware Tools versions fixed the problem, and now I have all VMware Tools functionality - including networking and just about everything except file sharing - working.
