I have to agree that this is complete gobblydygook :
-bash-3.2# pkg install -v -n SUNWipkg at 0.5.11-0.86
Before evaluation:
UNEVALUATED:
+pkg:/SUNWipkg at 0.5.11,5.11-0.86:20080620T101700Z
After evaluation:
pkg:/SUNWipkg at 0.5.11,5.11-0.86:20080426T174940Z ->
pkg:/SUNWipkg at 0.5.11,5.11-0.86:20080620T101700Z
None
So that means less than nothing to me. I have more than a little bit
of experience with Solaris and maybe even some hands on with various
Solaris Nevada releases but I have no clue what is going on with this
new package format and all those versions all over the place. This
thing is only 60 days old ( almost ) and it is out of control in terms
of package versions already.
Look at http://pkg.opensolaris.org/status and then search for the ipkg
release versions and you see :
pkg:/SUNWipkg at 0.5.11,5.11-0.75:20071031T175339Z
pkg:/SUNWipkg at 0.5.11,5.11-0.79:20080423T061943Z
pkg:/SUNWipkg at 0.5.11,5.11-0.86:20080426T174940Z
pkg:/SUNWipkg at 0.5.11,5.11-0.79:20080205T160845Z
pkg:/SUNWipkg at 0.5.11,5.11-0.75:20080205T151051Z
pkg:/SUNWipkg at 0.5.11,5.11-0.75:20071114T202952Z
pkg:/SUNWipkg at 0.5.11,5.11-0.86:20080422T214950Z
pkg:/SUNWipkg at 0.5.11,5.11-0.79:20080428T105333Z
pkg:/SUNWipkg at 0.5.11,5.11-0.75:20080423T061913Z
pkg:/SUNWipkg at 0.5.11,5.11-0.75:20080428T105324Z
hell .. it isn't even sorted in any order ... let me sort that
manually. Looks like a 5.11-075 in there and that is the lowest ..
pkg:/SUNWipkg at 0.5.11,5.11-0.75:20071031T175339Z
pkg:/SUNWipkg at 0.5.11,5.11-0.75:20080205T151051Z
pkg:/SUNWipkg at 0.5.11,5.11-0.75:20071114T202952Z
pkg:/SUNWipkg at 0.5.11,5.11-0.75:20080423T061913Z
pkg:/SUNWipkg at 0.5.11,5.11-0.75:20080428T105324Z
and then 5.11-0.79
pkg:/SUNWipkg at 0.5.11,5.11-0.79:20080423T061943Z
pkg:/SUNWipkg at 0.5.11,5.11-0.79:20080205T160845Z
pkg:/SUNWipkg at 0.5.11,5.11-0.79:20080428T105333Z
and then ... what? 0.5.11,5.11-0.86 it looks like
pkg:/SUNWipkg at 0.5.11,5.11-0.86:20080426T174940Z
pkg:/SUNWipkg at 0.5.11,5.11-0.86:20080422T214950Z
and then we need to sort the timestamps .. but I'm not going to do
that manually.
HOLD ON A SEC ....
the situation is .. worse

So the last one there is 0.5.11,5.11-0.91:20080620T101700Z
okay .. so that is the latest guy ..
This is nothing short of insane in terms of versions to track and to
figure out what a user would want. Those previous versions should be
hidden or buried .. or .. hell .. dumped onto tape or a ZFS snapshot
somewhere. Don't expose all that to an ordinary user.
If the objective here is to make things easier for the new user ...
sorry but this is a big miss by a wide margin. In the army this would
be called a winger. Like a high explosives round that lands on the
highway two miles to the left of the target area.
