I can't speak to how the support contract sales are being worked out,
but my understanding from the engineering side is that for security
patches, we'll make two versions available:
1) The normal integration to the next Nevada build - customers not
paying for support will have to upgrade to that build when available
(they're currently setting this up - I upgraded my 2008.05 machines
on Friday to nv_90 from the internal repo they're testing on and
it was very smooth and painless and amazingly fast) - you'll get
the security fix, plus all the other enhancements, bug fixes, and
possibly new bugs introduced in that build. This is much like
the way SXCE users got security fixes, except you won't have to
download the entire DVD for each build/fix.
2) An additional integration to the gates we forked at the initial
2008.05 build - customers paying for support will have the option
to get packages built from these that only contain the original
code plus security fixes and other escalated bug fixes - no other
enhancements or changes with the risks those entail. This is
more like where Solaris 8 & 9 patches are now. (Solaris 10
patches still get new features from the S10 update releases, so
are more of a middle ground between these two.)
