'truss /usr/bin/packagemanager' will give you a more detailed trace of  
what it's trying to do and if/where it's failing.  Since it's causing  
an unresponsive keyboard, you'll probably want to direct stderr to a  
file so you can review/post the output after logging out and back in.

It might also be useful to run 'prstat' in an another terminal window  
to see if any processes are running into problems while packagemanager  
is starting up.
