Should have mentioned that I tried that one too ;-)  It didn't work
however..  It could very well be a problem with the ACPI implementation on
my laptop however, booting the latest ubuntu kernel also often results in a
kernel panic (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/191137)
and it appears to be a Vaio-specific problem.

Thanks for the suggestion though!
