Dave, if it only were as easy as that, it seems that pkg doesn't even retry (or doesn't retry enough) failed connections, I got a timeout while in the middle of downloading the openoffice package (and that's a 5Mbps connection, and I was able to browse the internet just fine at the time, so it might have been pkg.opensolaris.org's fault as well), now imagine someone on a considerably slower network. Most of the programs that deal with downloading files off the internet have two important parameters: [number of connection attempts] and [timeout per attempt]. 

Tuning those two to a decent value will probably fix it for everyone.
