If you need compose input, you also need to change GTK application's
IM default to "xim" from "iiim". You can change it by commenting out
two iiim lines from /etc/gtk-2.0/gtk-immodules.
However, my recommendation for your case is to configure as follows
in iiim-properties.
General tab:
[X] Enable Input Method ---> iiim is used
Method status and switcher placement: None
Trigger Keys tab:
remove Ctrl+space

IM team will discuss this issue internally first and then ask opinions
to wider audience. Disabling ctrl+space by default for English locales
is one of possible options.
