Hi Shawn,
Actually we were using this approach. The problem was, the Appearance
window popup, with blank as its content -- there is nothing to see in
the window. We used the mouse to point blindly to the "Visual Effects"
tab, and clicked the approximate position blindly, and then type Alt+N.
Then we were able to switch back on some machines, but failed some
others. :-)
When compiz fails, most of the windows do not display content correctly,
blank dominates.

It's actually very easy to do this. System -> Preferences ->
Appearance -> Visual Effects.
