[indiana-discuss] Almost there on Acer Aspire 7520

I've been playing with OpenSolaris 2008.05 on my Acer Aspire 7520.

(Which isn't the 512M machine I've had trouble with, btw. That was
an old work machine I could afford to lose. This isn't.)

Just the livecd - I'm not going to risk trashing the machine until
everything works.

It's almost there, but not quite. And the not quite is going to make
me hold off for a while. (See bugs 1923 through 1926, for instance.)

But I can actually see the day - and it's not too far off - when I can
actually run OpenSolaris on this beastie rather than the preinstalled
option.

OK. No sound. No wireless. Had to manually do the network. But the
Geforce 7000M graphics are correctly detected (unlike DP1, where
the resolution was all wrong). And it feels pretty good.

(One attraction is that it's much quieter than my W2100z!)

The other thing I miss is sdcard support - it's quite convenient
just to slip the memory card from the camera in the slot rather
than mess about with USB cables to hook the camera up. It's
a shame that sdcard was slated to be integrated after the os2008.05
release (the bug says build 87, I'm not sure whether it made it).

So I'm not ready to jump yet, but this particular usage seems to be
right on target, so I'm going to be watching closely.

Which raises the question of how I find out whether the issues I've
had on this system are resolved. I mean, I'm not going to actually
trash what I have until I know it's going to work, and the livecd seems
to be the way to do that, so is it a question of having to wait 6 months
until the next full release?
