The thing is, Sun does provide the OpenSolaris HCL. I find it weird. It
appears that many systems have been tested years ago by Sun for S10 FCS,
and just recently, an OpenSolaris 2008.05 tag had been added.
I know, because I have that one, and got some annoying issues:

In the end, I would say that the only way to improve the users'
experience in most cases, would be to find as many cheap, buggy pieces
of hardware as possible, and improve the kernel to handle those bugs
more gracefully.
I think (Open)Solaris still assumes too often that the hardware is
always behaving nice, which is to be expected, since Solaris had most of
its lifetime on Sun-controlled hardware.
Not talking about hardware failures here, I know those are more
difficult to predict and handle.
