I had the same problem using a USB external CDRom Drive.

I admit I didn't read extensively all the installation documents about OpenSolaris, maybe it's written that USB drive can't be used to run/install OpenSolaris...

At the end, 3 different media (a CDRW, a CDR at full speed and a CDR at 1x speed) are laying around. All of them failed miserably with the grub prompt result.

Just before giving up, I "destroyed" another PC to get the internal IDE drive, and all the media worked perfectly.

Note that this USB external CDROM Drive works flawlessly with many other operating systems (from Windows XP/2003 Server to Ubuntu/Centos/Gentoo Linux) with the exact same host.
