Confirmed: I've implemented the workaround is comment 10 of that bug and removed the line 'S3-support enable' form /etc/power.conf . I have a 'shutdown' option in gnome, and I also have the 'suspend' option as expected due to my machine being in the whitelist (/platform/i86pc/kernel/drv/ppm.conf).
