Thank you all for the tips on upgrading the BIOS. I managed to get a USB 
floppy drive and used FreeDOS to upgrade the BIOS.

John I'll lookup the solx86-interest list to have a look in that approach.

BTW, after the BIOS upgrade, the laptop is running build 100a smoothly.
