man shutdown says:
By default, shutdown brings the system to a state where only
the console has access to the operating system. This state
is called single-user.
Try "pfexec init 5" instead.
To get rid of the message from sendmail, you can execute
/usr/sbin/check-hostname and follow the instructions (it'll probably
tell you to update /etc/hosts).
