For the completeness of this thread, I am posting a screenshot of OOo 3.0 runningin Solaris 10 (in this particular example, the version of Solaris update 6, or 10/08--but it doesn't matter):

The default version of OOo 3.0 was installed.  No zh locales were installed.  And Solaris 10 was running under the en_US locale.  As shown in the screenshot, both English and Chinese characters are perfectly display.

All things considered, Solaris 10 is probably still the best OS money can buy.
