That isn't true.  The stated memory requirements for OpenSolaris 2008.05
is 512M of ram.  And that configuration does in fact work for 2008.05.

That said, development releases of 2008.11 starting around build 98
appear to have an issue fully completing an installation with only 512M
of ram, they can still boot to the desktop in such a configuration
however.  We're working on figuring out why we can't complete an install
in 512M of ram and hope to have that fixed for the final release of
2008.11.
