Actually Harry Fu and I have discussed the workaround you proposed quite extensively in the bug report:

Please note that different （opposite) results were obtained between OpenSolaris and Linux (SuSE and Ubuntu).

As I mentioned in one of my previous threads, I have a different workaround which works within the OpenOffice.org itself (i.e., no need to set environmental parameter).  But as you indicated, workaround is not a satisfactory solution.
