I think you might have better luck on pkg-discuss (or freenode #pkg5
depending on the time of day) As best I can tell the slow performance
is a feature based on their design choice. (of course they'll argue
other package manager dependency solvers are stupid.. (which they are
right in some circumstances, but not all.)) I'm still waiting to see
the reaction when/if they announce an SXCE release with it included by
default.
To work around your problem.. you could pre-record your desktop demo and
then just speed the video up, make slides or...
