True, real (or nearly real) progress indication instead of simple
movement would be far more useful. This is done in BT3.

Grub2 has "1024 x 768 with direct RGB" (and "standard VGA Index Color mode")

While there is .png support you might do better with .gif and create 
a tiny animated bootscreen (a first ?), using .mng may be too big.

There are "combo" graphical boots with text which have worked with
some success and "underlaid" (opposite of overlaid) text boots which
are not too bad. I like BT3's "hole in the screen" but we can't copy it.


Or, do you mean that hitting a key would simply yank out the graphical
boot properties from the Grub line that was selected and then boot it.

Example: Hit [ESC] to delete these lines and boot

splashimage ...
foreground ...
background ...



Other OSes are using these key choices as "System Keys":
