Much improvement has been made to audio in Nevada/OpenSolaris. Using
GStreamer 0.10, you can buy WindowsMedia and MP3 audio decoder plugins
from the Fluendo webstore:

   http://shop.fluendo.com/

The MP3 decoder plugin is no charge, by the way. Fluendo absorbs the
cost.

I am hoping that they will soon be able to provide MPEG-2, MPEG-4, and
AC-3 for Solaris as well.

Also, the addition of Songbird to the latest Nevada builds and the
forthcoming OpenSolaris build is a big step forward, I think.

You can get MP3 and WMA support legally from Fluendo. I understand
Fluendo is going to deliver a DVD player for Linux and Solaris sometime
in the near future, hopefully. Perhaps other 3rd parties might also
get involved with this space. It would also be great if Sun made
something available directly, but there is obviously a lot of licensing
issues to work through.
