I installed the build 100a text build of opensolaris 2008.11 on my laptop. Here are my observations.
Good points:
1. The new images that are displayed while the OS is being installed are really nice.
2. Installation seems faster, at least for the first 50% or so.
Bad points:
1. The prompts when the CD boots which ask you for locale and language don't handle the backspace key correctly - it produces the familiar ^H when pressed. Adding a line like 'stty erase ^H' to the script will fix this.
2. I tried installing in a VM with 768MB memory and it didn't seem to like it. I tried again with 1GB and it worked. Has the minimum amount of memory required increased since 2008.05?
3. The live CD image is still too big for a CD.
4. Gnome is not the release version of 2.24 .
5. Fonts are distorted. In particular the terminal output has characters that overlap each other.
6. The installation review page that appears in the installer just before you press "install" says it is going to install Gnome 2.20 - it should say 2.24 .
7. The descriptions of the installation stages are still cryptic.
8. The display brightness control is not working properly on my laptop. This was broken around build 98. The brightness is adjusted correctly, but there are too many steps and going to the steps lower than the lowest backlight setting causes the backlight to flicker.
9. Grub is not installed correctly - this happens in both a VM and on bare metal on my machine.
10. The Device Driver Utility doesn't have an icon in gnome after installation!
11. I don't have any option to shutdown the machine in the gnome menu for some reason.
Two problems that are specific to my hardware:
1. Audio doesn't work. (Intel 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller: vendor ID 8086, device ID 284b)
2. Memory card reader doesn't work. I suspect this will never work, as I had problems with Ubuntu as well.
Cheers
Andrew.
