Sure, but if the first goal of Indiana is really this:

... then consider this scenario: I want set up a test environment to
host some Oracle stuff. I download Solaris for free, but I am
immediately unsure about which updates will be available to me if I
don't have a support contract. So turn to OpenSolaris or something
similar, and I immediately wonder how close it is to Solaris, and if
there will be additional issues if/when we decide to implement a
production environment.
On the other hand, I can install CentOS 4.5 right now, and just tell
the team it is RHEL 4.5. They can install Oracle on it using the
official Oracle instructions for RHEL, and I can keep it completely up
to date with Red Hat's updates (after a short lag) during the testing
period. When the tests turn into production and we want a guarantee,
will get the "official" version from RH and we won't have any
issues... we will essentially just be buying a guarantee for something
we have already been working with. The same goes for Ubuntu...
everything (all updates) free, I just pay for guaranteed support if I
want it. This is how Red Hat and Ubuntu broaden their userbases! I
can start using the official (or identical), stable, LONG-TERM SUPPORT
versions AT MY WORK with zero investment and zero risk. If Sun wants
to broaden their userbase they should make it as easy for me to do
this as it is with the Linux distros.
My department has plans to abandon Sun for Red Hat. As far as the OS
goes, I think the decision was probably made without any technical
consideration at all, and is just the dept's attempt to follow a
perceived trend (our parent dept. is doing it., yadda yadda) But the
above scenario shows how I can get the DBAs and developers on board
with RH (100% RH compatible) stuff long before we even have the plans
for the new infrastructure nailed down. The way things are going, I
believe Solaris needs this too if Sun wants to broaden the userbase.
