I installed the developer preview onto an external USB HD. The installer presented the drive as an install option and the install went smoothly. To boot from the external USB disk, you'll need to add an entry to your existing grub menu to boot from USB. I am not using Indiana full time, so I just changed the device boot order in the BIOS to boot from USB first.
