The way OpenSolaris is supposed to work, you don't have to "select the zh_CN in the initial install" in order to have a zh_CN desktop.

You can simply log out and select the simplified Chinese language option during re-log-in. If you are running a well-behaving IPS package (e.g., Firefox), it should show the Chinese GUI as demonstrated in this screenshot:

OTOH, if I am running a tarball-based Firefox, then I need to install the language packs.

With regard to OOo 2.4, if I want to run the IPS package, I need to uninstall the tarball version of OOo 2.4.1.  But at this moment, I don't know how to do that.  (Thanks a whole lot to Sun's Hamburg team provided to their Solaris brothers--NOT!)
