on OpenSolaris, as only XVR-100, XVR-300, & XVR-2500

Yes, this is correct - at least 4.17 version is required with wanboot
support. This capability can be  determined on an existing system by
executing the command

    # eeprom | grep network-boot-arguments

If the network-boot-arguments parameter is set or if the following
output is displayed

    network-boot-arguments: data not available.

then the OBP can be used with the Automated Installer.

It is not straightforward for now, since AI is the only supported way
to install OpenSolaris on Sparc for the time being.

This is correct - I have checked on sunsolve that newer version
is not available.
