some more info... as John mentioned, the X server seems to be 
advertising the correct xinerama settings.

xscreensaver -verbose  lists the correct xinerama settings for both 
monitors and with screensaver set to "random" it actually runs different 
screen savers on each monitor, but the password prompt is still split 
between both monitors...
