[indiana-discuss] [osol-discuss] why gnu chmod in os2008.11?

As always.. the GNU vs non-GNU tool set brings up a heated debate. The big issue I see here is that the GNU tools may be prevalent, but they obviously don't cover all use cases and can be broken on certain platforms. We have to remember that things like ACL's, special file systems, etc. are not just relegated to Sun. There are other flavors out there that have such features. To have a unified tool set would require the GNU apps to fully support the POSIX and platform specific bits. That would be nice, but I seriously doubt it'll happen. As such having the *standard* Solaris tools is critical for not just developers or SA's.. but also for commercial applications and tools (think about monitoring software alone). I do like the idea of having the GNU bits located in /usr/gnu, as it follows the other conventions /usr/xpg4, /usr/xpg6, /usr/ucb, etc. The strength here is that our platform can support multiple behaviors. It's just a matter of users setting the
correct $PATH statements. Is there a tool in Gnome and the CLI for ppl to select the behavior they want? That would be ideal.

The default environment at the moment is to prefer the GNU tools as
that is the more familiar environment for most developers and
end-users; over time, the plan is to provide a unified set of tools,
where possible, that is both familiar and fully supports OpenSolaris
specific features.
