I agree that the native/traditional tools and paths should be system default. Making global changes for users is already doable through things like /etc/profile or /etc/.login. What might make peoples lives easier is a tool in Gnome that can change the user level settings (.profile, .bashrc, .cshrc, etc.) to give the user the desired "personality", GNU, Solaris, XPG4, XPG6, UCB, etc. Perhaps even a CLI version. Something like that would probably make the new comers happier without making assumptions that will either make folks happy or angry from the start. Since we're talking about desktop users it seems like a pop-up when they first log into Gnome would make the most sense:)

Realisticlly.. for production environments.. ppl have their own custom shell setups that they bring over and rarely use the stock settings to begin with.

I agree with one caveat: the native fully supported and integrated Sun
tools should be come first the default PATHs when shipped and
modifying that value should be left up to the user. As for a setting
somewhere, why not simply put it in /etc/default somewhere along with
things like TIMEZONE, LANG and such? Logically that strikes me as the
best place.
