In fact, if you check the first page of www.kernel.org it clearly states 
following:

"Linux is a clone of the operating system Unix, written from scratch by 
Linus Torvalds [...] . It aims towards POSIX and Single UNIX 
Specification <http://www.unix-systems.org/> compliance."
