Hmmm. Strangely that fixed it. I say strangely because previously, when it failed, the download did not stall - it sat happily counting up the megabytes, then failed. 

It also seems to use a rather large amount of CPU time when it is downloading - perhaps it does some sort of checksumming as it is doing the download?
