[ Also posted on opensolaris.general ... [probably wrong group -ed hp]
also gave me a chance to pare some of the sniveling out]
I'm sorry to be sniveling about this but I'm having a heck of a time
finding basic troubleshooting guides. The documentation link on
opensolaris.org leads to a list that includes System Administration
but I didn't find basic stuff there... like how to -s boot or how to
fix a gui boot gone astray.
I've installed from osol-11 101b LiveCd.
Later attempted upgrading to dev.
I used the awkward clunky, slow GUI package manager because I couldn't
make out enough from `man pkg' to feel at all confident about doing it
that way. Where some of it is easy enough, there is a something or a
dirth of examples.
Cutting to the chase here... In the gui:
I added the dev repo and made it primary.
Then hit the update button. It ran quite a while and asked me a
couple of things... the only one I remember now was really more a
statement than a question telling me I was creating a new BE to boot
into.
Finally the pkg manager declared success.
I rebooted and now cannot boot into the OS at all. If I just leave
the bootup alone and let grub timeout and boot... this boot line is
activated:
OpenSolaris-1
it ends in a white screen that flashes slowly two or three times then
just remains white .... forever.
Selecting the text boot (shown below) results in very similar action
but the end screen which again flashes slowly 2-3 times, appears to be
a corrupted version of the normal
`powered by OpenSolaris'
boot screen with the bubbles pattern and again 'Opensolaris'
Oddly, whereas the normal boot screen is that wavy blue bkground and
White text, this has wavy blue background but its sort of fractured in
top 1/5 or so of screen and the `Powered by [...]' is a red/brown
instead of white. Kind of a heavy rust color... and there it stays
..... forever.
So reboot; and at the grub screen I see:
OpenSolaris.11 snv_101b x86
OpenSolaris.11 snv_101b x86 text boot
OpenSolaris-1 [cursur rests here by default]
So I select the text boot line and add -s
boot on up and get to the maintenance prompt and login as root.
But that is the wrong BE and I'm back in 101b
Now what to do....
Turns out If I let `OpenSolaris-1' boot I can then ssh into the box.
What should I do about bootup failing? What diagnostic output do you
need to help me figure out what went wrong and how to fix it?
Over ssh:
I'm in the 108 image alright and things seem to be ok from a ssh
console. But how to fix the bootup.
Once the bootup is fixed, I'd as soon ditch the gui boot login in
favor of a console login. And call `startx' when I need the gui.
I know I can remove `console=gui' at the grub boot screen but how to
make it permanent. But I'm getting ahead of myself here.
First off, how to fix boot so it works. There apparently is nothing
to edit in /boot/grub that has much to do with the grub boot screen.
If there is I'm not finding it there.
There must be files or something that control bootup, and what appears
at grub screen.
